Workman Watch: July 23 edition

Former Bowie High School pitcher Brandon Workman excelled in his second start since returning to the Pawtucket PawSox.
In Saturday’s 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Bisons at Pawtucket, R.I., Workman struck out six and walked only two in five innings of work. He didn’t allow any earned runs and just three hits over that span.
Overall, Workman threw 99 pitches, 59 of them for strikes. Pawtucket scored one run in the fourth and another in the fifth. That was all the PawSox staff needed to beat Buffalo.
The win improved Workman’s record in the minors to 5-1 this season, and lowered his earned-run average to 4.81.
Workman now has 43 strikeouts and 14 walks in 48-2/3 innings pitched, surrendering 26 earned runs on 53 hits. He has started nine times for the PawSox.
Workman was demoted earlier this month by the parent club, the Boston Red Sox.
As of press time, the Red Sox have not committed whether to bring Workman back to Boston.
In a Saturday story written by Jimmy Toscano from Comcast New England, Red Sox manager John Farrell was asked about Workman’s status.
“He needs to continue what he was working on between starts here,” Farrell said, “and that is more consistent command in the bottom of the strike zone. When he’s been down, that’s when he’s been most effective.
“Coming back from the time suspended, and the delay that was in there,” Farrell continued, “he was having a little bit more of a difficult time getting to the bottom of the strike zone. And we saw the home runs as a result of that. So, that’s what we’re focusing on.”
Workman gave up six home runs during his final four starts with the team before his demotion, losing three of those games.

Rodgers signs to Ranger College

Bowie’s Nathan Rodgers signed his letter of intent to run cross country and track at Ranger College.
The senior, who is the son of Ryan and Jessica Rodgers, has spent the past three years running on the varsity cross country team as one of its top runners. He helped the team win the district title in 2020 and has helped the Jackrabbits to team district runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2022.
While running in the regional meet the past three years, Rodgers had his best finish this past fall at 32nd.
Rodgers also played varsity basketball his senior year and helped the Jackrabbits make it to the regional quarterfinals.
“Ranger offered me quite a good deal,” Rodgers said. “The coach is a good one who will develop me and make me better. I already met some of my teammates so we already have that bond. All around it was just a good college.”
