Bowie officially began their 2014 campaign Saturday morning, taking on Conference 4A Division II Bridgeport in a scrimmage.
“I told the team before the game I didn’t want turnovers, and I wanted us to stay healthy,” said head coach Dylan Stark. “I knew it wouldn’t be perfect, we saw a few things to work on but we also saw some good things.”
The offensive side looked very consistent, especially with the running game.
“I feel you have to run the football to be successful,” Stark said. “So yes, we’re going to run the ball a lot more this season.”
The defense was stout at the beginning, but began to falter a little late into the scrimmage, giving Bridgeport life. Still, Stark said the defense played well considering the opponent.
“It’s hard to prepare for a scrimmage, because there isn’t any film or playbooks to study from. I still think the defense played well. Sure, we missed a tackle here and there, but we were in the right position.”
The coach said he chose to schedule Bridgeport and Burkburnett because he wanted a challenge.

Bowie senior Nathan Rodgers signed his letter of intent to run at Ranger College on Monday.

Bowie’s Nathan Rodgers signed his letter of intent to run cross country and track at Ranger College.
The senior, who is the son of Ryan and Jessica Rodgers, has spent the past three years running on the varsity cross country team as one of its top runners. He helped the team win the district title in 2020 and has helped the Jackrabbits to team district runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2022.
While running in the regional meet the past three years, Rodgers had his best finish this past fall at 32nd.
Rodgers also played varsity basketball his senior year and helped the Jackrabbits make it to the regional quarterfinals.
“Ranger offered me quite a good deal,” Rodgers said. “The coach is a good one who will develop me and make me better. I already met some of my teammates so we already have that bond. All around it was just a good college.”
