Bowie teen overcomes big obstacles
By BARBARA GREEN
Courageous and inspirational are a few of the words members of the Bowie High School staff use to describe Mandie Hicks.
It is not because she is an exceptional student or excelled in sports, it is because she is an exceptional daughter helping her mother survive a debilitating illness and still sticking with school.
When the 19-year-old walks across the stage to accept her diploma Friday night, it will be a major accomplishment that almost didn’t happen. Since last September the young woman has been helping her mother as she struggles with recovery from a pair of strokes. Read the full feature on this Bowie graduate in the weekend News.
