Bowie Memorial approves plan to seek tax district vote

Published

on

The Bowie Memorial Hospital Board of Directors met Wednesday afternoon to consider requesting an election that would ask voters to create a hospital tax district.

The board voted to proceed with preparing a petition that will be presented to the Montague County Commissioner’s Court seeking an election for an .1850 cent proposed tax per $100 in property value that would fund a hospital district. The boundaries for the proposed district will encompass only Bowie Independent School District. There was discussion about including other areas, but the board opted to stay with the local school district. About 15 people were in attendance.

The hospital district would like to have the commissioners add the election to the Nov. 3 general election ballot. It would be the fall of 2016 before any newly formed district could start collecting taxes if the proposal was approved by voters.

Bowie Memorial Hospital has been struggling for the past five years after the failure of a previous tax district elections that included Bowie ISD and Forestburg ISD. Hospitals officials have said it is uncertain if the hospital can remain open without some immediate financial action and closure is a possibility.

Draft county subdivision rules prepared for hearing

A public hearing has been scheduled for 9:45 a.m. on May 28 for the Montague County Commissioner’s Court to present the updated subdivision regulations that have been in the works for several months.
That date was set during Monday’s court session, where a development officer also was named and a state-required notice was approved. The 89-page draft of the subdivision regulations are available on the county website co.montague.tx.us/page/montague.home.
It was August 2019 when the regulations were adopted by the commissioners after much debate among water well drillers, groundwater district staff and directors, realtors and land developers.
During those original discussions water issues lead the way as many counties especially around heavily populated urban areas are experiencing water shortages and possible contamination due to an inadequate number of houses and wells or even the use of a public water system in the rural areas.
Charley Lanier, who has been working as a grant officer for the county, was named to be the subdivision development officer. After a brief 10-minute executive session, the court named Lanier who they said would be the “initial contact” for all developers who will accept all paperwork and plats.
