Bowie to apply for federal energy subsidy funds for new efficient equipment

The City of Bowie will apply for a low interest federal tax credit bond program that could help fund an energy efficiency and conservation project in the community.

Tuesday night, members of the city council discussed the application with Billy McCord with Ameresco, the company conducting the feasibility study on a possible project. That report is expected sometime in July.

In the study Ameresco is examining automated water and electric meters, replacing street lights with more efficient units, water treatment plant efficiencies and leak detection technology are the primary components of the study.

Thanks to a recent state law a municipal entity can pursue a project, but the company doing the work must show and guarantee the energy efficiencies will save enough money to pay for the financing of a project.

The city manager also gave a report on the questions about the lake emergency spillway elevations.
