Sheriff’s deputy resigns following indictment

Montague County Sheriff’s Deputy Lee Phariss submitted his resignation to Sheriff Paul Cunningham effective on Nov. 3.
Cunningham said they are accepting applications to fill the position.
Phariss was indicted on Oct. 26 by the Montague County Grand Jury on a charge of official oppression, a Class A misdemeanor.
The indictment alleges Phariss in his capacity as deputy, intentionally caused bodily injury to Daniel Lee Harris by applying pressure to his neck to impede his breathing. At the time, the suspect was in custody and restrained with handcuffs.
Phariss was employed since August 2007. After the indictment, the deputy was suspended without pay.
