Bowie City Council debates filling police, fire vacancies

A full audience of firefighters and interested citizens looked on Monday night as the Bowie City Council consider budgetary decisions in the fire and police departments, along with the pool operations, employee insurance coverage and the water and sewer departments.
During the March 27 Town Hall Mayor Larry Slack outlined pressing revenue and expense issues in many departments.
The city staff also was directed earlier in March was directed to prepare reports on the above mentioned areas and make recommendations to reduce expenses within 45 days.
Four items were addressed Monday night. Action on proposals for sewer and water rates was tabled for further review; the police department will be allowed to fill one of two vacancies with other officers filling any gaps on patrol; the fire department’s request to fill one vacancy was defeated; and recommendations to streamline the summer recreation program were approved.
