SAN ANTONIO – Janelle Shackelford, 82, passed away on April 10, 2017 in San Antonio, TX.
There will be a graveside service at the Montague Cemetery in Montague at 2 p.m. on April 15.
Janelle was born on Oct. 5, 1934 in Montague to the parents of Willard Melvin and Lorena Barnes Shackelford.
Janelle grew up in Montague County and graduated from Nocona High School and from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in English and French. She attended Louisiana State University for graduate studies.
As part of a military family, Janelle taught school in Germany for a number of years. She continued to teach school after returning from overseas. Janelle moved to San Antonio and worked as a government employee at Fort Sam Houston until retirement.
Janelle was a loving mother to her children, devout Christian and active member of Cornerstone Church. Her hobbies included writing poetry, art, growing grapefruit and spending time with family.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jon Paul Homer, ex-husband, Hershel Homer and brother Kenneth Melvin Shackelford.
Janelle is survived by her daughter, Lynn Allison Mixon and husband Travis Mixon; granddaughter, Christina Mixon; grandson, Mark Mixon; great grandson, Ayden and sister, Norma Sue Shackelford Taylor, Shreveport, LA.
