For the first time in school history, a Forestburg girl has qualified to participate in the state golf tournament.
Forestburg’s Hope Phipps carded a two-day 226 at Squaw Valley on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Phipps was 10 strokes better on the second day, with a total of 108.
“Her putting was spectacular,” said coach Cori Hayes, who was especially proud of Phipps’ second-round – which vaulted her to a qualifying spot.
“She made two 20-foot putts,” Hayes added. “The green were fast. They dried up quick with the heat on Thursday.”
Hayes said Phipps’ qualifying for state is a big deal, and may force the schedule to change.
The Glen Rose-based Squaw Valley is like playing two different courses in one, with the links style front and the back nine featuring many more trees and narrower fairways – more like Turtle Hill in Muenster.
Phipps will compete at the state meet April 15-16 at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin. Read more, and see complete regional tournament scores, in the April 29 Bowie News.
