When the Advantage Sports Complex decided to run its own high school volleyball tournament three years ago, there was much trepidation.
Now, the ASC/Nike Tournament is one of the largest events of its kind throughout the state of Texas, and both Bowie and Nocona will be part of the action.
“Having Denton Ryan (High School) as a site has helped out a lot,” said tournament organizer L.J. Sariego. “I think we have 77 teams this year.”
Sariego is extremely pleased to have Lucas Lovejoy and Plano West in the Division I field this year. Lovejoy is a top-ranked Conference 5A program in the state.
At the same time, Sariego is happy to give smaller schools an opportunity to play at a large venue with Denton Ryan.
“I think we have a nice balance of teams from 2A, 3A and 4A in Division II,” said Sariego. “I’m happy with how that turned out.”
A new feature this year is the “Thursday Super Pools,” which is for those schools who wanted to play for three days. There will be 32 schools involved in the added attraction.
The Division I matches on Friday will take place at ASC in Carrollton with Division II at Denton Ryan.
Nike once again will serve as tournament sponsor, providing T-shirts and gift bags to all the coaches. Read the Aug. 9 Bowie News for the complete story.
