It is official; the Bowie boys basketball program will have a new coach patrolling the sidelines next season.
Doug Boxell accepted an open coaching position at Krum. It became official Wednesday night at the Krum school board meeting when he was approved unanimously.
Boxell led the Jackrabbits to the program’s sixth state title and the first one since 1974 last month. In his five years at Bowie, Boxell went 129-50 with district titles in all five years, capped with a state title win against Mount Vernon.
It was also Boxell’s sixth state title he has won at his fourth different school. He was named 3A coach of the year by the Texas Basketball Coaches Association.
Bowie athletic director Dylan Stark hates to see Boxell go, but knew he would get opportunities elsewhere with his resume and recent success.
“When you win a state championship, you know people will be interested,” Stark said. “He’s such a good coach with a history of winning state championships at four different schools, you know people will be trying to get him. It was just a good fit for his family and we wish him all the best.”
