Longtime art Bowie teacher Cindy Hedeman says 37 years after first she stepped into a classroom she can still be “blown away” by a child’s thought process as they find their place to shine through their artwork.
Hedeman washes up her brushes and packs up jars of paint, craft paper, glue and scissors for the last time as she retires from Bowie Intermediate School after 37 years as a teacher, 32 of which were in Bowie.
It’s a bittersweet time for the popular teacher who has spent her career in the elementary school levels.
The 59-year-old decided now was the time to retire because she wanted more time for other things she is passionate about like her own art, horseback riding and taking care of her home and animals. She is partial to doing watercolors and wants to take more classes. There also are plans to work part-time at Victory Christian continuing to teach art.
“I can still do what I like, but I’ll have much more time for me,” said Hedeman.
