At Saint Jo, the Panthers faced a depleted Gold-Burg roster and prevailed 50-0 at Harley Sewell Field.

The game was stopped with 1 minute, 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Bears showed enough resolve to prevent the 45-mercy rule as long as possible.

“They gave us a tough game, even though they were limited,” Saint Jo head coach Chad Tallon said.

Tallon said he was pleased with the focus of his players from the start, and the Panthers built a 22-0 lead by the end of one quarter.

Saint Jo stands at 2-1 heading into its Sept. 19 game at Vernon Northside. Gold-Burg is idle, offering itself time to allow Colt Rainey and James Cantwell a chance to heal from injuries. Neither Rainey nor Cantwell played in Friday’s game.

“We knew our kids would give their best effort,” Gold-Burg head coach Jay Johnson said. The Bears had a couple of golden chances to score, driving inside the Panthers’ 10-yard line twice.

Garrett Parker opened the scoring with a 27-yard TD pass to teammate Laramie Brawner. Wyatt West and Brawner added TD runs later in the first quarter. By halftime, Saint Jo’s lead was 30-0.

Gold-Burg tried to put the finger in the dike and keep Saint Jo from the mercy rule for most of the second half.

Henrietta 37, Bowie 9

At Henrietta, Bowie’s Kevin Stallcup opened the game’s scoring, but then the Bearcats scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to take control of the proceedings.

Bowie dropped to 1-2 on the season heading into its Sept. 19 game versus Pottsboro at Jackrabbit Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Jackrabbits added a safety in the third quarter, courtesy a botched Henrietta snap. However, the Bearcats reeled off nine points to pull away for good.

Bowie had been averaging 424 yards per game through its first couple of contests, but managed just 165 against a stingy Henrietta defense.

Forestburg 56, Wichita Falls Christian 8

At Forestburg, Longhorns freshman running back Daniel Sharon scored three rushing touchdowns while teammates Malaci Moore and Matthew Wallace both threw a pair of TD passes for an easy victory.

Sharon finished with 165 yards on the ground. Moore chipped in with 129 yards passing, and Wallace 87 yards as the Longhorn offense turned prolific.

Forestburg head coach Wayne Tuckwell reported the game was stopped midway through the third quarter.

The Longhorns, with a 2-1 mark, will play on the road next week against Denton Calvary.

Ponder 27, Nocona 3

At Nocona, Catalino Hernandez booted a 27-yard field goal during the second quarter, but that was the only offense the Indians had to show for in a loss to Ponder.

This marked the season-opening game at Jack Crain Stadium.

Nocona stands at 0-3 heading into its bye week.

The game was close at halftime, with Ponder clinging to a three-point lead. However, the Lions racked up 21 points in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Bullfighter starts early training for his future dream job

Published

When most young kids get into rodeo, the craziest ones might be lucky enough to ride small bucking horses and maybe bulls in their late teens.
Then there is 12-year-old Riggin Garrett, who is already pursuing what he hopes is his future career as a bullfighter. It is a dream he began trying out several years ago at rodeos in and around this county.
This is not the Spanish variation of bullfighting where they end up killing the bull, this is “freestyle bullfighting” which is more popular in America. Here bullfighters attempt to make the bull look a fool, using their athleticism to barely dodge them, put their hats on their heads, leap over them and sometimes use a barrel as a prop. They also work as protection for the cowboys during the bull riding to help save bucked off riders.
In competition, both the bullfighter and the bull are judged after a 60-70 second encounter with points scored due to the various maneuvers pulled off.
Garrett is the son of Keysha Avens and Shane Garrett, and will be going into seventh grade at Saint Jo. As long as he can remember, Garrett has always been interested in bullfighting.
