More than 1,600 students from fourth- through 12th-grade will compete at the Bell County Expo Center for the 10th annual Texas National Archery in the Schools Tournament and Scholarship Championship.
Archery’s popularity is on the rise thanks to Hunger Games’ star Jennifer Lawrence.
Overall, 63 schools will compete and 704 of the entrants are girls.
“It’s an opportunity for kids who are not necessarily athletes to participate in a sport that is in the Olympics,” Burnie Kessner, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department archery coordinator, said.
This year, total college scholarship awards will be double the amount for each of the past four years. The total scholarship purse is $20,000. Read more details in the mid-week Bowie News.
For information, call Kessner at 1-979-862-7341 or email at: burnie.kessner@tpwd.texas.gov.
