Bowie wins thriller at Henrietta

Published

on

Right in time for homecoming week, the Bowie Jackrabbits got their first win Friday night in Henrietta.
As opposed to the previous week, where the Jackrabbits lost at Bridgeport in the final minute of the game, Bowie was able to score in the last 60 seconds of this game to get the 21-13 win.
Neither team’s offense could get much going in the first quarter, but the Jackrabbits found one play that seemed to go for a chunk of yards almost every time they ran it.
Slot receiver Joey Crawford would come in motion and get handed the ball on a jet sweep around the left side. They used it a few times in the beginning of the game and went back to it in the second quarter as Crawford scored from 3 yards out to give Bowie a 7-0 lead.
The Bearcats were able to tie the score up before halftime when they completed a short 4-yard pass to make it 7-7 heading into halftime.
The Jackrabbits had a tough time trying to stop Henrietta’s running back Mason Marchman. He had 140 yards of total offense and led the Bearcats in both rushing and receiving. Marchman scored on a 7-yard run to give Henrietta a 13-7 lead.
Coach Dylan Stark challenged his team to step things up as they had not executed like he knows they can. Bowie’s offense responded, going on a scoring drive that ended with Ty Harris running it in from 7 yards out to tie the game at 13-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Bowie’s defense was able to stifle the Bearcats offense from getting any big plays, especially in the passing game, giving up only 66 yards and even intercepting a pass.
The Jackrabbits offense just could not get many big plays going in the passing game they enjoyed the previous week in Bridgeport, but ran for a good clip of 185 yards on the ground. Penalties and two lost fumbles put an end to some promising drives as the clock started to wind down in the fourth quarter.
Bowie got the ball and was able to work it into Henrietta’s territory, but were still out of field goal range to try a kick. They ran the motion they had run all game with Crawford, who had run for a team leading 107 yards on just seven carries from this play.
The Bearcats left cornerback hesitated for a moment, but that moment of hesitation allowed Jackrabbit receiver Boo Oakley to run right by him with no safety over the top.
Quarterback Payton Price put the ball right on Oakley for the 27-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute to go. A gadget reverse play to Crawford turned into a pass to Price, who out jumped the Henrietta defender to score the two-point conversion and put Bowie up 21-13, which is how the game ended.

The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model.
