While Bowie Independent School District Superintendent Steven Monkres had his three-year contract extended one year Thursday night it became irrelevant as Monkres announced he will be retiring at the end of August.
The board went into executive session for Monkres annual evaluation and contract action, voting to approve the traditional extension. Monkres, superintendent the past nine years, declined the extension announcing his retirement.
The superintendent has a 30-year career in education, 21 years of which were with Bowie ISD. He began in Bowie as a teacher and coach, following in the footsteps of his mother, longtime Bowie teacher Nancy Monkres.
“It is something I have been considering and praying about for a while now. I think it is time. I appreciate all that has been done for me, but I would like to pursue other options,” he said.
