1A schools compete at area track meet

In a quick turnaround from last week’s district track meet, the 1A schools competed at the area meet on Tuesday in Bryson for a chance to qualify for the regional meet.
Athletes again had to finish in the top four of their event in order to move on.
Only a few athletes were lucky enough not just to qualify but win their events.
Isaac Renteria from Gold-Burg won both the boy’s 3200 and 1600 meter races while setting school records in both. Fellow Bear Jayon Grace won the boy’s shot put while also qualifying in the 100 meters and the long jump.
From Saint Jo Jessie Weger won the girl’s long jump.
From Prairie Valley, Tyler Winkler won not just the boy’s 300 meter hurdles but the pole vault.
While not an individual, all three of the Saint Jo boy relay teams won their races in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400.
Some other boys who qualified for the regional meet in other events include: Caleb Workman and Mathew Sampson from Saint Jo in the 300 meter hurdles, Will Johnson from Forestburg in the 400 meters, Collin Thomas from Saint Jo in the 800 and 1600 meters, Devin Stewart from Saint Jo in the high jump, Jesse Wadsworth from Forestburg in the 800 meters and triple jump, Wade Lucas from Saint Jo in the pole vault, Eli Freeland from Gold-Burg in the discus and the Forestburg 4×400 relay team.
The girls also had several girls qualify for the regional meet including: Weger from Saint Jo also qualified in the pole vault while with her sister Jacie Weger they both qualified in the 200 meters, Mercedes Diaz from Saint Jo and Sadie Weaver from Gold-Burg did in the 100 meter hurdles, Ollie Gaston from Gold-Burg in the 300 meter hurdles and 800 meters, Bryndel Brewer from Saint Jo in the 400 meters, Linzie Priddy from Prairie Valley in the in the 800 meters, Grace Martin from Bellevue in both the 1600 and 3200 meters, Madisen Deason from Forestburg in the high jump, Justynne Roller from Forestburg in the discus and Reagan Ladewig from Forestburg in the shot put.
Of the relays, only Saint Jo’s 4×100 and 4×200 relays qualified as well.
The regional meet is scheduled for April 28-29 at Whitney High School, with only the top two finishers in each event qualifying for the state meet.

Nocona gets delivered new press box

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

Richey repeats at IFYR

Sunset native Cason Richey (right) and his team roping partner Beldon Cox from Weatherford repeated as the International Finals Youth Rodeo champions last weekend at Shawnee, OK. Richey and Cox won the previous year and were able to complete the repeat by catching three steers in a combined time of 16.6 seconds. Richey is expected to compete attend Texas Tech University this fall and compete on the rodeo team.

Youth rodeo awards presented

The Chisholm Trail Youth Rodeo had its awards ceremony this week, giving out plaques and buckles to the top competitors throughout the summer season.
There were four age categories with five events to compete in for the young athletes.
Along with the best results in each event, at the end the overall best cowboy and cowgirl in each age division was awarded as well.
The lead line division, in which an adult helps the young competitors, saw Rylee Stewart win the first in poles, barrel racing and mystery event on her way to win top cowgirl.
Hattie Snow got the fastest time in the flags event and Lany Shupak got the fastest goat time. Riggin Bishop got named the top cowboy in the division.
In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
In the 13-18 age division, Tess Egenbacher won the top overall cowgirl award.
Kiley McCracken won both the barrel racing and flags event. Emma Strahan won the poles and mystery event. Hadlee Bryan won the goats event.
There was no top overall cowboy in the age division.
