Saint Jo historian says cattle trails ‘clouded in error’

Saint Jo’s Tom Weger has never been afraid to go his own way in his business or personal life.
So it was no surprise his exploration and research into the cattle trails in Montague County has “rankled” some residents.
Weger’s curiosity and research developed it into a 47-page research paper he turned into a book and a 47-minute documentary. He also has organized the “Real Chisholm Trail Symposium,” which will be in Saint Jo on May 6.
The symposium is presented by the Saint Jo Chamber of Commerce, Saint Jo Historical Society and the Museum of the Stonewall Saloon. Researchers, professors, historians and members of some of the prominent cattle driving families from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas will attend to share information on the cattle-driving era.
Weger has spent the last two years researching cattle trails in Montague County and it has resulted in a book and a 47-minute documentary. He explores what he says are “Hollywood myths” compared to the actual facts about the trails and the business of driving Longhorns to market.

Bowie Community Center presented a concert featuring the music country greats Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash this past Friday night.
Local libraries wrap up their children’s summer reading programs this week.
The Bowie Public Library brings the popular Creature Teacher with all their spectacular animals for the final event on July 23 at the Bowie Community Center.
The program begins at 10 am. The children also will receive their prize books for their summer logs.
The Nocona Public Library ends its program at 10 a.m. on July 24 at the H.J. Justin Building at 100 Clay Street. The program will be “Our Own Action Heroes -” Nocona fire, police and EMTs.
