As the new school year opens, Montague Independent School District celebrates the opening of its nearly 10,000-square foot addition. The district also will dedicate the building to the late Melvin Fenoglio who served as an educator and administrator at the school for almost 40 years.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 5 p.m. on Aug. 15 with Meet the Teacher to follow. School officials said this is a great opportunity to see the new gym, new classrooms along with meeting the staff. The parent athlete meeting for sixth-eighth graders will be in the old gym at 6:15 p.m.
Ground was broken last October for the 9,875-square foot building. The new gym will be used for all grades for physical education classes as well as athletic competitions.
Total cost of the overall construction project was $1.6 million funded without a tax increase. Superintendent Carla Hennessey explains the old gym will be turned into a cafeteria space, while the former cafeteria becomes instructional space. The new arrangements will allow third and fourth graders to move into the main building from a portable building.
