Nocona Council approves budget, hears from citizens on clean-up ideas
Members of the Nocona City Council approved the 2019-20 budget and the 2019 tax rate during its Tuesday night meeting.
The panel also heard from a group of local citizens and officials from the Nocona Chamber of Commerce exploring avenues for clean-up activities in the community.
City Secretary Revell Hardison said there was a lengthy question and answer period on the clean-up activities as the citizens asked what they could and could not do in regard to high grass, trash and other similar things based on the city codes.
There also was discussion on expanding the hours at the convenience station which is open on Airport Road on Saturday morning. This group would like to have it open more hours.
The property owners in Nocona will see a slightly lower tax rate for 2019 as the council adopted .5058 cents, compared to the 2018 rate of .53870 cents per $100 in property value.
There are three operational budgets approved by the council: General operations, golf fund (Indian Oaks Golf Course) and the utility fund. The city also has oversight on the economic development corporation 4A and 4B board budgets which are funded through economic development sales taxes.
The operational budget for the city which includes general, golf and utility is projected at $3,675,317. This compares to $3,640,664 in 2018-19 following a budget adjustment during the year. The original budget was $3,618,864.

The Montague County Commissioner’s Court will meet at 9 a.m. on Oct. 12 in the County Courtroom at the Courthouse Annex in Montague.
Commissioners are scheduled to consider issuing a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month within Montague County.
The court also will consider accepting $850 in unanticipated revenue for the sheriff’s office generated during National Night Out activities, alongside interlocal cooperation contracts between the Texas Department of Public Safety and Justices of the Peace for Precincts 1 and 2.
An executive session is scheduled to discuss personnel matters pertaining to sewer/septic inspector for the county. Any action would be taken back in open session.
The Oct. 9-11 Art of the Song Music and Art Festival opens Friday night for three days of art and entertainment in downtown Nocona.
The festival opens on Oct. 9 with a Chisholm Trail Art Association Preview Party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the H.J. Justin Building.
Come see all the entries for the adult show, which formally opens at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10.
Live music will be played by Full Circle Band.
Also on Oct. 9 enjoy a Nocona Nights Street Dance from 7 to 9 p.m. with the Mark Murphey and Highway 82 Band. Cost is $10 per ticket and $200 for a table seating eight. Bring your lawn chairs.
