Bowie News wins first place general excellence in TPA contest

Published

on

The Bowie News won first place in general excellence in the 2019 Better Newspaper Contest of the Texas Press Association.
Award presentations took place last weekend at the 140th TPA Convention and Trade Show in Galveston. Along with the general excellence award, The Bowie News won third place sports photo, fourth place sports coverage and fourth in Blue Moon Special Section for the Second Monday 125th Anniversary special section.
Competitions were divided into nine divisions in which newspapers competed against publications of similar circulation. This year 107 newspapers submitted 1,094 entries. There were 23 semi-weeklies competing in those two divisions. Entries were judged by the Tennesse Press Association member volunteers.
Bowie News publisher Michael Winter said he was very proud of the entire staff and their contributions to the publication and its special projects. Winter has been the owner of The Bowie News since 2011. His father, James Winter, was publisher from 1965-2003.
“The Bowie News has been published for 98 years and we are proud to produce the only twice-weekly community newspaper in Montague County. We believe our coverage reflects our community in all facets and we were excited to be recognized in the TPA contest,” said Winter.
