What will it be, more winter or early spring?
What will Groundhog Day 2015 bring, early spring or more winter? The unique holiday arrives on Feb. 2.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the groundhog tradition stems from beliefs associated with Candlemas Day and the days of early Christians in Europe. For centuries the custom was to have the clergy bless candles and distribute them to the people.
The Germans picked up this tradition and believed that if the sun made an appearance on Candlemas Day, an animal, the hedgehog, would cast a shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of bad weather, which they referred to as the “Second Winter.” And gray skies indicated that spring was on the way. The Back to School Fair for Bowie Independent School District students will be 9 a.m. on July 20 in the high school cafeteria and gym.
The fair will feature free school supplies, haircuts and eye screening and vendors.
The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
