Workman hosts clinic at Bowie
Bowie’s most recent professional athlete Brandon Workman spent two days this week hosting a baseball clinic at the high school field.
The two-time World Series champion pitcher who graduated from Bowie High School in 2007 wanted to give back to his community and contacted former high school teammate and current Bowie baseball Coach Tyler Price.
“Brandon reached out to me about doing this and I thought it was a great idea,” Price said. “Something that would be good for the kids around here. I thought it was a real cool opportunity so I was all for it.”
Workman brought along his college teammate at the University of Texas and former major league catcher Cameron Rupp along with his dad Dennis Workman who coached him up as a kid.
Workman followed the Jackrabbits playoff run all the way to the regional finals, the farthest since 1981.
He wanted to help both the current and next generation continue to grow the game in the area.
Despite the heat, 40-50 kids showed up ready to learn the fundamentals as well as brush shoulders with professional baseball players.
“It’s definitely great being able to do this,” Workman said. “They definitely had a great season at the varsity level so just trying to kind of help some of the younger kids along and try to build a program here. It’s awesome to be able to help out a little bit.”

Nocona and Gold-Burg opened district play with convincing wins Oct. 9 while Saint Jo and Forestburg suffered tough losses.
Brief summaries of area county games follow:
Nocona 49, Chico 7
The Indians nearly had a shutout but managed to get the road win. Nocona Coach Jeff Hill said Chico turnovers and Nocona capitalizing on them was a big key to the win.
“We took advantage of those opportunities, and I’m proud of how our guys executed offensively when it happened,” Hill said. “We would have had a shutout if not for a pick-six which the defense made a really good play.”

Peaster jumped out to a 20-0 lead midway through the first quarter and Bowie was never fully able to recover in a 50-14 District 4-3A Division I game Oct. 9.
Bowie, which lost its second straight game, is 4-3 overall while Peaster is 3-4. Rabbit Coach Tyler Price said Peaster capitalized on Rabbit mistakes.
“When you don’t do your job, you get exposed,” Price said. “The same mistakes are continually showing up and we’re not able to fix them right now.” Price said a good look in the mirror by both players and coaches has to happen if things are going to improve.

Bowie’s teams competed in the District 6-3A Meet at Burkburnett High Oct. 12.
Brayden Willett and Kellen Rater finished 1-2 individually with ties of 16:44.29 and 17:17.80 to lead the Rabbits in a 2nd-place finish. Hayden Cos was 11th in 19:26.39, Hayden Sutton was 16th in 20:03.33 with Shawn Willett 19th in 20:29.34. Also running for Bowie was Coleman Holloway in 20:39.44 and Taven Melton running a 20:54.19.
The Lady Rabbits finished 4th led by Laney Segura with a time of 14:09.89. Bella Lozano finished with a time of 15:20.49 followed by Isabella Casell in 15:30.43, An’Dee Miller in 15:39.61, Angeles Alvarez in 15:44.87 and Kylee Waldrep in 16:27.33.
The boys sualified for Regionals in Lubbock Oct. 27.
