FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: Bowie falls to Hirschi by 12

By ERIC VICCARO
The Bowie High School football had fourth down-and-1 at the Hirschi 40-yard line late in the game.
Down just six points at the time midway through the fourth quarter, the Jackrabbits had a mishandled snap and they couldn’t convert.
“One play did not cost us the game,” Bowie head football coach Dylan Stark said. “There were many different things.”
Stark said he applauded Bowie’s effort, but the team “could not get over the hump” and earn the win.
Bowie stands at 0-1 heading into next Friday’s home opener against Lake Worth.
The Jackrabbits tried staying stride for stride with the Huskies by using a short passing game; however, in the end Cedric Battle’s 304-yard rushing performance put Wichita Falls Hirschi over the top.
Bowie opened the scoring in the first quarter as Jay Ward caught a 24-pass from Lawson Mickler. Battle later responded with an 86-yard TD run.
The Jackrabbits’ Carter Shackelford scampered 13 yards for a TD in the final minute of the second quarter only to see Battle answer with a 64-yard TD run.
Kevin Stallcup powered his way to the end zone on a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter while Hirschi’s Deon Mitchell later countered with a 53-yard TD run.
Shackelford added his second TD rush of the game, with a 10-yard effort in the fourth, which closed the Huskies’ lead to six points. But, Battle scored two more TDs during the final frame, and it was enough to hold off Bowie.
Bowie finished with more than 400 total yards. Hirschi won in Danny Youngs’ debut as head coach.
