Mankin replaces Mayo as Nocona boys basketball coach

New Nocona High School head boys’ basketball coach Tyson Mankin knows success.
Mankin was a Conference 1A state semifinalist as a guard playing for Morton High back in 2002-03, the same school he took to the third round of the postseason as head coach in 2011-12.
Still, Mankin knows he has a tough act to follow in replacing legendary coach J.D. Mayo.
“It’s going to be tough, but I’m looking forward to this,” said Mankin, who played college basketball for two seasons at Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa. “I want to create something new and put my stamp on things.”
Mankin said coming to Nocona is an advantage because the Indians have been well-coached under Mayo.
After two seasons at Morton, Mankin went to Menard, where he guided the team to the regional tournament. Menard fell to the eventual Conference 1A Division II state champions, Douglas.
Most recently, Mankin coached at Brackett, taking a school that hadn’t made the playoffs in nearly two decades into the second round. Read the complete story in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.
