Gold-Burg’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played host to different opponents Tuesday night.
The Lady Bears opened District 1A-21 competition against Bellevue while the Bears played host Poolville’s junior varsity squad.
In the first game of the evening, the Lady Eagles soared on the road with a huge 79-12 win.
“It was a really good first step for opening the district,” said Bellevue coach Bryan Goehring.
“We’re just focusing on progress,” said Gold-Burg coach Lyndsey Shaw. “We scored more against them the second time, and with fewer girls.”
The Lady Bears offensive struggles continued into the first quarter of this game – down 26-4 after one. The struggles continued as a six-point fourth quarter was the best they could muster in the defeat.
“We have a lot of work to do on offense,” Shaw said. “We struggle with keeping the ball in our control playing against teams like Bellevue.”
Bellevue, meanwhile, was firing on all cylinders throughout the game.
The Lady Eagles were relentless in the first three quarters, scoring at least 20 points in each quarter.
Goehring said the team mixed it up through the game, starting by pressing their opponent, then moving into man-to-man play and finishing with a 2-3 zone scheme. Read more, and see complete box scores, in the weekend Bowie News in print and with your electronic subscription.
