MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Workman avoids surgery for now

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said on Wednesday Brandon Workman’s right elbow strain will not require surgery at this time, according to NESN.com reporter Ricky Doyle.
Workman received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on Wednesday.
According to the website Hospital for Special Surgery, platelet activation plays a key role in the process of wound and soft tissue healing.
This injection is used for tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints, and can be used for various musculoskeletal problems.
Workman, a former standout at Bowie High School, is not the first Red Sox player to receive this type of injection. Ex-outfielder Carl Crawford had one in April 2012.
In addition, Workman was transferred from the minor league baseball seven-day disabled list to the major league 15-day DL.
Also on Wednesday, Workman visited with famous Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his elbow strain. It was determined Brandon will rest and undergo rehabilitation, and that’s when he received the injection. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.
