The Bowie High School football team suffered through another blowout loss on Friday – this time to Gunter.
Now the Jackrabbits have two weeks to prepare for the District 4-3A-I opener against Boyd, and the team should have Cayden Cox back at middle linebacker, head coach Dylan Stark reports.
“Cayden will be back,” he said.
Bowie will challenge Boyd on Oct. 9 at Jackrabbit Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Bowie is coming off a defensive performance in which the Jackrabbits gave up a season-high 49 points. They allowed 8.73 yards per play.
What made the loss more troubling was the fact Bowie gave up plenty of big plays. Four of Gunter’s seven scoring plays covered at least 23 yards.
“It got away from us,” Stark said. “It was a play here, a play there. It was 21-14, and we gave up a big play right before halftime to make it 28-14.
“We gave up some big plays,” Stark continued. “Defensively, we have to get better, especially in third-down situations.”
Gunter converted on 7-of-12 third downs, and that was one reason why the Tigers were able to keep drives going and score so many points.
Stark said he’s been pleased with how the Jackrabbit offense has been able to move the ball.
Against Gunter, Bowie totaled 349 yards as Trace Hardee completed a season-best 18 passes for 219 yards with three touchdowns. Jeffery Howard caught six balls for 105 yards. Read more, and see the complete box score, in the mid-week Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
