Two Montague County football teams, Saint Jo and Gold-Burg, played a classic 6-man football game in Stoneburg.
Meanwhile, Forestburg earned its first win of the season on Friday night, defeating a tough Wichita Christian bunch by 32 points on the road.
And Nocona suffered a gut-wrenching loss, falling to Ponder on the road as Jonathan Aguilar scored the game-winning touchdown from 44 yards out.
This week, Saint Jo returns to Harley Sewell Field for its Homecoming game against Northside. Forestburg also plays at home versus Denton Calvary. Gold-Burg travels to face Lakeland, with the game in Carrollton. All kickoffs are set for 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Nocona will be off this week as it prepares for District 2-3A-II action, giving the Indians a couple of weeks to practice before their opener at Henrietta.
Both Saint Jo head coach Chad Tallon and Gold-Burg head coach Jay Johnson were pleased with Friday’s game, as the Panthers narrowly defeated the Bears 44-39.
“At halftime, I challenged the boys,” said Johnson, who said the Bears made some adjustments on offense to give players more space while Gold-Burg was more aggressive on defense.
Tallon said the Panthers’ youth may have got the best of them in the second half.
“I think our youth kicked in,” Tallon said. “We had to finish the game. Gold-Burg fought well to get back into it.”
Saint Jo will be helped by the return of Blake Anderson in this week’s Homecoming game.
“He (Blake) will give us another speed threat,” said Tallon, who hopes to see better blocking from the Panthers’ offensive line this week.
Northside will use multiple formations against the Panthers, and present a 2-3 look on defense. The Indians will provide the Panthers a test since they are so big and physical.
Meanwhile, Gold-Burg will face a Lakeland team it scrimmaged before the start of the 2014 season. Read more, and see game summaries, in the mid-week Bowie News.
