Like the week before for girls, basketballs rolled out for area boys’ programs this past Wednesday.
Bowie head boys’ coach Doug Boxell, who has won five state championships here in Texas, said 14 have reported out for basketball.
That figure doesn’t include those still playing football this season.
“It was nice to get going, and get started on our work, our journey,” Boxell said.
There are high expectations for a number of area teams.
Bowie made a deep playoff run last season, falling in the regional semifinals to Ponder. Nocona also qualified for the playoffs from District 3A-9, ousted in the bi-district round.
Boxell said he’s eagerly anticipating the season.
“I think we have a lot of size this year,” Boxell said, “with both Mosleys (Gary and Daniel) and Chase. We have a second-year point guard in Keck Jones, and Jeffery Howard is back. I think there are a lot of positives.“
Boxell said during Monday’s Booster Athletic Booster Club meeting the Rabbits will practice in the early morning this week.
Bellevue claimed the District 1A-21 championship a year ago, and Forestburg also qualified for the postseason from as a third seed.
There are several new coaches this season with Bret Botard, formerly of Palestine, at Nocona – replacing Tyson Mankin.
“The kids are working extremely hard, and they are all eager learners,” said Botard, who reported 12 boys out for basketball – which doesn’t include those playing football. “We’ve made good progress. I think we have some talented players.” Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
