OUTDOORS: Salvinia found in East Texas

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has confirmed giant salvinia in the Chaney Branch on Lake Fork, located in the Piney Woods.
The infestation has been confined to this branch, and another small cove west of the dam, the TPWD reported. The area covers an estimated 3¼ acres.
The growth has been in place for several months, and the plants were likely introduced by a boat trailer that wasn’t cleaned, drained and dried.
The Sabine River Authority (SRA) immediately closed boat ramps at Chaney Point South and Secret Haven, at the westernmost end of the branch – as a means to eliminate further risk of spreading this invasive plant.
The authority also has conducted reconnaissance at bridge crossings and had shoreline surveys by boat to look for additional infestation.
Crews have removed the salvinia plants, and placed them in garbage bags for disposal.
In addition, they placed about 1,100 feet of floating boom across the creek – containing the infestation within the 90-acre cove.
SRA staff has installed a floating sign and lights to alert boaters to the presence of floating boom.
