County commissioners meet Monday

Montague County Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. on Jan. 11 in the courthouse annex.
A variety of items will be taken up by the court from the block grant to pave roads in Montague to insurance issues.
Paperwork for the Texas Community Development Block grant that will fund paving of the primary streets in the county seat of Montague will be presented for review. The county received $275,000 to help pay for the paving, along with engineering fees and grant administration.
A related engineering services agreement also will be reviewed.
The court will consider its 457 deferred compensation plan related to employee insurance. This is an annual resolution connected with the program meeting all Internal Revenue Service requirements.
A preventative maintenance proposals from DLS Detention Lock and Equipment Service is up for action. During the last year repair work was done on doors at the county jail, and this would help maintain those units.
Other items on the agenda will include: Monthly report from the veteran’s service office; bids for two properties in Nocona and Oak Shores Additions; bond for precinct one commissioner; and accept a donation from the Bowie Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8789 to the sheriff’s office.

Jury finds ex-DA Casey Hall guilty on theft by a public servant

The jury was seated on Monday and the opening day of testimony Tuesday only lasted four hours, before the panel went into deliberations about 2 p.m.
Two hours later the jury returned a guilty verdict on both charges. Wednesday morning the jury was set to begin discussion on Hall’s punishment at 8:30 a.m. with both sides offering evidence and testimony. Hall faces up to 10 years in prison.
The trial was moved to Denton County on a change of venue requested by Hall in March. After 16th District Judge Sherry Shipman read the verdict, it was reported Hall hung her head in disappointment and was later seen crying and emotional as she left the courtroom.

Brief agenda awaits city council

Members of the Bowie City Council will meet in regular session at 6 p.m. on May 13 in council chambers.
The meeting opens with a proclamation for Emergency Medical Services Week.
City Manager Bert Cunningham will report on recent rainfall problems, Smythe Street sidewalk project and the substation work.
There is only one item of new business an ordinance related to speed limits on specific streets. Public comments and approval of minutes wrap up the agenda.
