FOOTBALL: Monkres named all-state honorable mention

Published

on

The Texas Associated Press Sports Editors have named Bowie High School offensive lineman Josh Monkres an all-state honorable mention in Conference 3A for a second straight year.
Monkres helped Bowie win its first playoff game in 34 years, in a 44-40 victory over Clyde, as the Jackrabbits advanced to the area round of the Conference 3A Division I playoffs.
This season, the Jackrabbits showed they could move the ball on most everyone, and the team put up 407 points in 12 games – finishing with a 6-6 record.
Monkres played primarily center for the team.
“He’s one of our leaders,” Bowie head football coach Dylan Stark said. “He had a great year, and he deserves it. We’re proud of Josh to represent our school and out football team.”
Stark said Monkres is so effective because of his quick footwork. He’s strong in terms of both run- and pass-blocking, the coach commented.
Monkres was a running back earlier in his career, which has served him well.
Stark reported Monkres is undecided on his future college plans, but this surely is something to add to the résumé.
Other area honorable mentions were Henrietta defensive end Logan Carter and linebacker Cody Fletcher.
Cameron Yoe tailback Traion Smith was named the offensive player of the year, rushing for 2,022 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Smith will face the 3A defensive player of the year in Brock’s Zane Young, who amassed 159 tackles and six quarterback sacks thus far this season. Brock and Yoe play at 5 p.m. on Dec. 17 in the 3A-II championship at Houston’s NRG Stadium. Read more in The Bowie News.

The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model.
