HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bowie boys face top competition

Despite finishing the Decatur Tournament with three straight losses, the consensus is the Bowie High School boys’ basketball team improved this weekend.
Want proof?
The Jackrabbits, even with a 6-6 record, moved up one spot in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Conference 3A poll from 17th to 16th.
That’s because Bowie lost to Conference 6A Denton Ryan by only 10 points, and they also played Hallsville tough before falling 66-56. On Saturday in the tournament finale, Bowie suffered a 63-51 loss to Wichita Falls Hirschi.
“Hallsville played a different defense against us this year, and they worked the ball better,” Bowie head coach Doug Boxell said. “They have a lot of talent, and No. 14 (Blaine Parker) can shoot the 3.”
Hallsville’s half-court defense stymied Bowie as the team made just 16-of-62 field goals (26 percent).
Boxell said playing in the tournament made the Jackrabbits play team basketball, and overcome physical challenges. Read more in The Bowie News.
