YOUTH SPORTS: Nocona Junior Girls win another national title

The Nocona Junior Girls won the championship in the Little Dribblers’ Continental National Tournament at Hearne, Franklin and Calvert.
This is the same tournament that Nocona played host to last year in April.
Nocona topped Evadale in the Junior Girls championship 42-31, and went through the entire tournament unbeaten.
Earlier in the tournament, Nocona defeated Franklin 34-10, Normangee 47-10, Evadale 34-14 and Martins Mill 44-19.
“They won this last year and this year,” said Angela Kleinhans in an email to The Bowie News.
Lance Meekins, Chelsi Stone and Sommer Smith coach the Junior Girls squad.
The team consists of the following players: Megyn Meekins, Haven Hilton, Kaygan Stone, Ava Storey, Skyler Smith, Jayce Rose, Emilee Reed, Jacie Pirkey, Makaylee Gomez and Reagan Phipps.
Nocona Senior Girls topped Normangee 47-12, and then defeated Chapel Hill in a tight game 45-43 to move on.
The Senior Girls then topped Martins Mill 51-49 in overtime and Grapeland 33-31. Martins Miller topped Nocona in the championship 46-38. Read more and see a team photo in the April 20 Bowie News.

Prairie Valley hosted its high school awards banquet on May 9. The O.C. Mann Award went to Josh Stout and Linzie Priddy.

Gold-Burg High School hosted its awards banquet on May 22. The Gold-Burg Iron Bear Awards went to Eli Freeland-White for boy athlete and Hallie Nelson for girl athlete.

Richey headed to National Finals

Bowie’s Cason Richey (right) and his horse Hello Lashes, qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo this month. Richey competes in team roping as a part of the Texas Tech University rodeo team as a freshman. The CNFR is scheduled for June 15-21 at Casper, WY.
