Bowie bands ready to jazz it up for two final concerts

The school year may be winding down, but the Bowie Independent School District bands are busy rehearsing for two big events.
On May 19 at 5:30 p.m. the sixth through twelfth grade concert bands and choirs will perform “A Night at the Movies.”
Director Aaron Martin said the music will all be movie-themed and includes some video presentations. The concert will be in the junior high auditorium.
The bands get jazzy on May 21 with a Jazz Band concert featuring not only the two high school jazz bands, but The Langdon Center Big Band out of Granbury.
Martin, who has played in the Langdon band the last 10 years, said it is primarily composed of band director or retired directors who volunteer their time. Any money raised goes to a foundation that provides music scholarships.
This jazz concert will take place at 6 p.m. in the Bowie Community Center. Admission will be $5 for adults and $2 for students and children.
Martin said the program will be something like “old school big band music similar to a USO show.” Funds raised will be shared between the two bands.
