Bowie, Nocona pools prepare to open this week

With the official start of summer underway this Memorial Day weekend, the local swimming pools are preparing to open for the season.

“Splash Day” at the City of Bowie Swimming Pool will be 1 to 6 p.m. on June 4 providing free swimming. Daily hours for the pool this summer will be 1 to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission is $3.

The Summer Recreation program runs June 6-July 1, 8 a.m. to noon, Monday-Friday. There is a $2 charge per day per child.

Summer Rec is open to children who are at least in kindergarten, and not older than 15 years of age.

Children will enjoy supervised games, sports, arts and crafts, music and swimming. Permission forms will be available on the first day, but they also can be picked up at the city office, pool and schools.

The pool staff also will conduct mini swimming lessons May 31-June 3. Cost is $24 for children ages three and older. Session times are 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., noon, 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. if needed. To sign up call Pool Director Cheryl Cromleigh at 940-445-9025.

The Nocona Swimming Pool, operated by the Nocona Independent School District opens for the season on June 3. The hours are from noon to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

The cost to swim is $4 per day. Individual and family season passes are available. Swimming lessons will be announced at a later date. according to pool officials. Questions may be directed to 825-6920, or 940-389-0440 after June 3.

Letters to Santa due by Dec. 4

Hey kids, it’s time to get your letters ready for Santa Claus!
The Bowie News invites families to submit their letters to Santa for publication in the Dec. 21 edition. Forms are available on our Facebook page and at bowienewsonline.com.
Print out a form and drop it off in Santa’s mailbox at the News office, 200 Walnut Street or in one of the school Santa boxes across the county.
Deadline to send in a letter is Dec. 4. While this may seem early there are hundreds of letters to type and then they have to ship off to the North Pole for the Big Guy to read.

New mayor takes oath in Saint Jo

A new mayor and two returning aldermen took the oath of office on Nov. 13 for the Saint Jo City Council.
The three races were uncontested during the recent election. Kelly Williamson will take over as mayor, as Colton Thomas and Melissa McPherson continue in their places. Thomas was elected to be mayor pro tem.
Aldermen took care of numerous organizational tasks related to its economic development boards and the council. Former Mayor Shawn Anderson and Hennessey were removed from city-related accounts, with the new mayor and mayor pro tem and McPherson were added to the city accounts.
