Nocona girls expect tight district title race

The Nocona Lady Indians come into the season hoping to get over the hump.
Whether that hump is beating district rival Bowie or going far in the playoffs, the Lady Indians know their time is now.
A strong sophomore class nucleus includes four who saw time as freshmen: Laramie Hayes who earned second team all-district, Trystin Fenoglio who was on her way to a great freshman season before a leg injury kept her out for most of district play; the district’s six-man of the year Chloe Daughtry and Averee Kleinhans, the only freshman to earn all-state honors in 3A last year.
This has the community excited for not just this year’s success, but for future team’s as this group gets older.
Still this year’s team has the promise to start something special that last year teased was possible. Senior first team all district Brooke O’Neal returns to be a pesky defender and a solid outside shooter. They will miss the scoring and leadership that Emma Meekins provided last year and the hustle work from post Ashley Womack, but young talent is ready to step in to the bigger role.
All of this comes with a new coach as Heather Nobile stepped down after last year. She is still around but the program will now be headed by new coach Kyle Spitzer. While young, this is not Spitzer’s first head coaching job as he spent four years at De Leon High School.
