Voters approve Tier 2 proposition

Published

on

Voter turnout for the May 4 election was 11.78 percent as citizens considered one city council race and one county-wide proposition.
As with many spring elections, turnout was low. There are 13,193 registered voters in the county with 1,554 casting ballots Saturday.
This also was the first election where the new voting machines were used. Elections Administrator Ginger Wall said everything ran smooth and most of the feedback was good.
Proposition A related to changing Montague County’s state status as a Tier 2 county was approved with 1,409 voting yes and 139 voting no.
Changing the county to Tier 2 will now require any incorporated entity that wishes to annex property into its jurisdiction to conduct an election of those property owners, where that forced annexation would be decided. The Tier 2 status would not affect voluntary annexation requests.
There was only one city race for the Nocona City Council where longtime Mayor Robert Fenoglio ran unopposed. There were two seats up on the council. Don C. Davis, incumbent councilor received 99 votes, while Robert Fuller received 126 votes. Incumbent Councilor Tom Horn fell short with 91 votes.
Davis has served six, two-year terms, while Horn had served five terms.
Fuller is a retired Department of Public Safety trooper and Nocona graduate, as are the two incumbents. Fuller formerly served on the Lindsay City Council.

Illegal dumping continues at Bowie Mission

Published

on

Staff and volunteers at the Bowie Mission continue to be plagued by people who dump their unwanted furniture and other items at their gates and doors. Despite having signs stating this is illegal and that there are surveillance cameras on scene, dumpers don’t seem to be phased.

This past week several large pieces of furniture were dumped right in front of the gate where the trailer used to go pick up food bank items is stored. Cynthia Brewer, director said most of the volunteers are older and it is difficult to get these large items moved out of the way. She is at her wit’s end trying to get people to stop dumping and while she hesitates to file police charges the situation is getting untenable as people continue to violate the policy.

Anyone who observes illegal dumping at the mission is urged to call the police 872-2251.
