County commissioners set elected official’s salaries

Montague County Commissioners set elected official’s salaries during a Friday budget workshop and changed their mind on giving a $5,000 pay increase to the sheriff’s commissioned staff.
During the last budget workshop the court voted to give the sheriff’s licensed officers a $5,000 pay increase, on top of the five percent pay increase allocated in the budget for all county employees. However, the court voted Friday to rescind that order and change it to $2,000 annually for a deputy and $2,000 for a corporal.
The motion passed with Commissioners Bob Langford and Mark Murphey voting yes, Mike Mayfield and Roy Darden voting no and County Judge Rick Lewis breaking the tie.
Lewis said with this increase the sheriff should have “some latitude” to recruit and retain officers, which has been an ongoing problem as they move to larger counties for higher pay. Read the full story in the mid-week Bowie News.
