City responds to clean-up calls, expands scheduled
The City of Nocona has responded to calls from its citizens to expand opportunities for clean-up efforts and increased the hours of the central recycling center.
Earlier in September a large group of citizens and community advocates filled the city council chamber urging the city council to approve its request for expanded hours as part of an overall Keep Nocona Beautiful campaign.
The city staff was directed to work on expanding the availability of the refuse site and this week a new schedule began going to four, half-days a week.
The central recycling center has been operating for the past several years, but was open only on Saturday mornings. Located at 1197 Airport Road, this center includes a dumpster for household trash which requires a fee, a brush pile, a recyclables container and a metal container. The city pays for pick-up of the dumpsters and in the past has received a grant to pay for part of it.
Expanding the hours use of the facility will be monitored for any time or day adjustments, as well as use by citizens reports the city staff.
The new days will be Monday, 8 a.m. to noon; Wednesday, 1-5 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. These days may be subject to weather. These new hours began on Sept. 16. Read the full story in your weekend Bowie News.

July Jam planned for July 27
The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
