‘Christmas Star’ conjunction appears in skies on Dec. 21

Published

on

In a year filled with tragedy and loss, an astronomical phenomenon on Dec. 21 may provide at least a ray of light and hope this holiday season.
On this date, which is the official start to astronomical winter in the northern hemisphere, Jupiter and Saturn will appear closer to each other and appear more like a single bright star and is being referred to as the “Christmas Star.”
According to EarthSky these planets meet up in the night sky about once every 20 years, but this year’s encounter will be the closest they have been seen in the sky since 1226. A similar conjunction took place in 1623, but the planets appeared too close to the sun, making it difficult to spot.
