City of Nocona receives a ‘clean’ audit

The Nocona City Council handled a lengthy agenda of varied topics during its April 12 meeting including an outside audit and selecting a contractor to mow the cemetery.
Nocona’s financial statement for 2020-2021 was presented by Michael Edgin of Edgin, Fleming & Fleming PC. The city received a “clean audit” with no issues or weaknesses.
The city gave its official authorization for a hazard mitigation assistance grant application as they seeking funding for generators for the west and south sewer plants, plus city hall and the community center to provide power in the event of an outage or emergency. A grant administrator and engineer have already been selected. At this time the city operates with a portable generator.

Commissioners conduct brief meeting

Montague County Commissioners handled a very brief agenda of business Monday morning.
The court accepted all five bids for base rock #1 #2, oversize and chip rock for a one-year period. Bidders included J.R. Thompson, P&K Stone, Cooke County Crushed Stone, Martin-Marietta and Burnco. Commissioners agreed as they accept all members can use the company that may be located closest to a project or if one is out of a product, they can go to another one.
The construction bond was released on Red Oaks subdivision in precinct four. Commissioner Bob Langford said the developer had completed the roads and they met the specifications.
Sheriff Marshall Thomas asked for a line-item budget adjustment of $14,343.26 for unanticipated revenue from the Texas Association of Counties for auto damage claims on two patrol vehicles. He explained a Dodge Durango was severely damaged by hail while on patrol and one of the pickups hit a hog while on an emergency call.
There was a budget workshop listed on the agenda, where it is expected to remain until the budget process is completed to allow any elected officials or office holder to submit any requests.

Sheriff welcomes two new deputies

The Montague County Sheriff’s Office has added two new deputies to its ranks: Ian Hostetter and Peter Meier.
Both officers have previously worked for the sheriff’s office in other capacities and have demonstrated strong work ethics and excellent job performance.
Hostetter and Meier graduated from the Vernon College Police Academy on June 12. Completing the nine-month training program requires dedication, determination, and a commitment to public service. Both officers successfully passed the Texas Peace Officer Licensing Exam. Congratulations to them for reaching this important milestone.
Ian Hostetter graduated from Nocona High School in 2022. He began his career with the Montague County Sheriff’s Office in 2023, first working in detention and later in communications. Sheriff Marshall Thomas said from the start, Ian has shown a strong desire to become a peace officer.
Peter Meier graduated from high school in Friedburg, Germany in 1991 and earned his degree from the University of Friedburg in 1994. He served as a rescue diver in the German Navy from 1994 to 1998. Meier joined the Montague County Sheriff’s Office in 2018 as a detention officer and has expressed his desire to become a peace officer from his first day on the job.
