Swearing-in ceremony Friday for new district judge
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Attorney Trish Coleman Byars of Windthorst, to serve as the 97th District Court Judge, replacing retired 97th District Court Judge Jack A. McGaughey.
Judge McGaughey retired at the end of May and applicants for the position sent their resumes to the appointments division of the governor’s office.
The new judge will serve out the remainder of the term which ends at the end of 2024, when it will be up for election. A swearing-in ceremony will be at 3 p.m. on July 28 in the Clay County Courthouse.
Byars has practiced law for nearly 18 years, originally opening her general practice in Vernon before relocating to Wichita Falls, where she has practiced a variety of different types of law.

Memorial Day BBQ planned at Carpenter Shop
Make plans for the annual Memorial Day Celebration at 5 p.m. on May 27 at the Carpenter Shop in Nocona.
Enjoy BBQ ribs, french fries, cole slaw, beans, dessert and iced tea for $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Food prepared by the local VFW. Proceeds go to the senior citizens center and the Meals on Wheels program. Call 825-3148 for reservations.

2024 Senior Keepsake Special Section inside today’s Bowie News
GRADUATION – Our area seniors are ready to soar as they await their 2024 graduation exercises. See all the Montague County and Bellevue seniors in today’s special section. Special thanks to the seven seniors who took part in our photo shoot to represent their class.
The Bowie News asked all the high school principals to select a senior from their class that best represents the class whether it be for overcoming adversity or any other attribute. We appreciate the seniors braving the gale winds that blew across the runway at the Bowie Municipal Airport during the shoot. We know they will fly high as they graduate from their high schools and step toward their futures. (Left) Jayson Gill, 18, Bellevue, son of Jana and James Gill, plans to attend North Central Texas College to study electrical technology; Melissa Segura, 18, Nocona, daughter of Maribel Basaldua and Claudio Segura, Midwestern State University to study accounting; Anna Livsey, 18, Bowie, daughter of Jeff and Kim Livsey, MSU to major in education; Cody Gaston, 18, Saint Jo, son of Jennifer and Kendell Gaston, seek a job where he can build and work on power lines; Natalie Gomez, 18, Forestburg, daughter of Fatima Esparza and Robert Gomez, MSU to major in education; Zane Bumgardner, 18, Gold-Burg, son of Tracy Lee and Ricky Gene Bumgardner, work at Gold-Burg ISD and Maddy Yeargin, 19, Prairie Valley, daughter of Josh and Kaylee Yeargin, attend NCTC then transfer to MSU to become an elementary teacher.

Slaton celebrated for 50 years on the job for City of Bowie
