Bowie basketball teams lose early season games
Bowie boys
The Bowie boy’s basketball team lost a tough game on Saturday against 4A Aubrey.
The Chaparrals beat the Jackrabbits 70-42 in a game where Bowie’s defense could not contain Aubrey.
The Jackrabbits offense had a rough game in their first win of the season earlier in the week against Hirschi, but the defense carried them in that game.
That did not happen on Saturday.
The Chaparrals scored 19 points in the first quarter and then 17 in the second to get out to a lead.
With Bowie scoring nine in the first quarter before rebounding with 15 in the second quarter thanks to a couple of made 3-pointers, the score was 36-24 at halftime.
Any thought of the Jackrabbits making a second half comeback was dashed when Aubrey came out of halftime on fire. The Chaparrals scored 21 points while Bowie was held to just seven points as the lead continued to grow and grow.
The fourth quarter was more competitive, but it did little for the Jackrabbits to make up its deficit.
Bowie was overmatched as Aubrey took the win 70-42.
Boston Farris led the team with 18 points and four made 3-pointers. Andrew Sandhoff joined him in double-figures with 15 points.
It was a tough matchup going against the bigger 4A school and Coach Ryan Dykes would have liked his team to have competed better, but it did not happen.
With Dykes still getting used to his mostly inexperienced team, hopefully these types of games pay off down the line into something positive.
Bowie is next scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 at Burkburnett.
Bowie girls
The Bowie Lady Rabbits lost a close game at home on Friday night against Burkburnett.
The Lady Bulldogs held on to win 56-52 against a Lady Rabbit team playing from behind for the whole game, but made a good charge in the second half.
Bowie was trying to bounce back from a bad road loss at Ponder and knew it had another challenge playing a 4A Burkburnett that is usually at worse a challenge during most seasons.
The Lady Bulldogs got out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. With the next two quarters mostly even, the Lady Rabbits trailed 47-38 heading into the final period.
Bowie got close, but ultimately could not make the shots at the end to get it done despite the defense holding Burkburnett to single digits in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs won 56-52.
Kayleigh Crow led the team with 17 points while Ziba Robbins was second with 15 points.
It was a tough loss, but it showed Bowie fighting back after a rough start which can give hope in future games the team can turn negative situations around.
The Lady Rabbits are next scheduled to play at the Breckenridge Lions Club tournament on Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
