The Bowie News won several top awards in the 2015 Texas Press Association Better Newspaper contest presented last week at the annual summer conference.

The News won first place in editorial for opinion pieces written by Editor Barbara Green; first place in feature writing for stories by Green and Debra Dunlap, staff writer; and first place in sports coverage coordinated by Eric Viccaro, sports editor. This was the second year in a row for Bowie News sports coverage to be honored with first place.

The News’s design team earned a second place in advertising, and the staff earned a second place for best website and a fourth place for news photos.

Those placements earned the newspaper enough points to take second in sweepstakes.

This year 140 newspapers submitted 1,490 entries. The contest is broken down into 10 divisions where newspapers compete against others of similar circulation size.

Michael Winter, publisher of The Bowie News, said he is very proud of the staff and its accomplishments.

“It is our goal to be the leader in local news and information, as we strive to provide relevant content across all platforms — Print and digital,” said Winter.

The Bowie News is published in association with Post Oak Media, which publishes the North Texas Farm and Ranch Magazine and other specialty publications.

After more than a year of turmoil and upheaval it appears the Amon Carter Lake Water Supply Corporation is back on its feet with a slate of new board members and plans to review by-laws and operations.
Last August all the board members resigned in the wake of a lawsuit by a resident who could not obtain water for a small housing development despite being in the district. The property owner also accused the board of not following open meetings or open records laws, or its own by-laws.
After the board resigned a receivership was requested from the court and was named in December 2025. The receiver or temporary manager was Nocona attorney Zach Renfro, who was directed by the court to seek out possible directors to rehabilitate the association and assure it meets the obligation of continuing to provide water to more than 300 members.
The corporation board conducted its first general membership meeting on March 27 where a state of the corporation was given and new directors

named. They are Kevin McShan, president; Josh Swint, vice president; Carla Swofford, secretary; Wesley Kelly, treasurer; Zach Gunter, Rob Hankins and Chase Thomas, all directors.
