Street Smarts: The history of Bowie street names
How many of you have heard of the families of Lindsay, Cowan, Cummins, Stallings, Cooper, Smythe, Sanders, Nelson, Alsabrook or Lamb?
Those names represent many of the early pioneers who settled this area before the railroad. These pioneers transformed an empty prairie into a civilized community whose progress has continued for over 132 years.
The Bowie News will publish a series of articles that will give a biographical sketch of the lives of early settlers, who were instrumental in the development of our city. In the weekend edition, the News begins a series that explores the history of the pioneers who founded and developed Bowie, and whose names dot street signs in the main downtown area. Barbara Winingham explores the unique history of these streets and pioneers. Article one: Cowan Street.

The heat advisory that has been in place all week continues until 8 p.m. Friday night.
The National Weather Service reports strong high pressure overhead will bring triple digit high temperatures along with heat index readings approaching 110 degrees for much of next week. To reduce risk of heat related illnesses when outdoors, schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas, and stay hydrated.
Make sure to check on your older neighbors to make sure they are staying cool and hydrates, and make sure pets have shade and water.
