Pearl Harbor sailor coming home; Walters identified after 78 years

A Navy seaman killed in the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941 will be returned to his hometown of Bowie and laid to rest for the final time after he was officially identified as Fireman 1st Class Bethel Elbert Walters.
The lengthy and painstaking process of identifying remains interred as unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii continues 71 years after they were declared unidentifiable. Recent years have seen more and more of these heroes coming home.
This is the second Montague County serviceman killed at Pearl Harbor to be identified and returned home. In 2018, Seaman 1st Class James C. Solomon was buried at Forestburg after he was killed on the USS Oklahoma.
Walters will be interred during graveside services at 10 a.m. on March 14 at Elmwood Cemetery with Patrick Walters, the sailor’s nephew, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on March 13 at the White Family Funeral Home.

The Back to School Fair for Bowie Independent School District students will be 9 a.m. on July 20 in the high school cafeteria and gym.
The fair will feature free school supplies, haircuts and eye screening and vendors.
The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
