HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bowie’s girls’ press too much

The Bowie High School girls’ basketball team established the tempo early in Monday’s Conference 3A-II Bi-District playoff game.
The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 13th-ranked Lady Rabbits outscored the Lady Cats 26-6 in the opening quarter – and never looked back – in a 71-31 drubbing of Whitesboro at Sanger High School.
“I thought our pressure got to them,” Bowie head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said. “We got after them. We were able to fly around. We got going early.”
The players agreed with such sentiment.
“We knew we had to come out and hit them hard,” said Courtney Brady, who paced all scorers with 22 points and she also distributed a game-best seven assists.
“We rotated really well on defense in the first quarter,” Logan McMurray said.
Yes, Bowie played that well. In fact, Davis-Pastusek thought the Lady Rabbits’ smothering full-court press was perhaps its most effective this season.
In the end, Whitesboro made just 14-of-50 field-goal attempts for 28 percent. The Cats weren’t aggressive on offense, and that was all Bowie’s doing.
