OUTDOORS: November, time to go camping

Published

on

Cool, crisp evenings and changing trees signal the start of November, which makes this the perfect time of the year to go camping – according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Texas state parks offer camping enthusiasts space for stargazing and self-directed activities.
There are a variety of ways to stay overnight in Texas state parks.
Cabins, screened shelters, recreational vehicle areas and campsites are all places to stay.
Reservations fill up quickly as November is a popular camping month. Visitors are encouraged to book their trip in advance.
There are also Texas Outdoor Family workshops for those interested in brushing up their camping skills.
For only $65, park rangers and expert volunteers guide families on how to set up a campfire, pitch a tent and cook outdoors. All the camping equipment – tent, lantern, cooking stove and dishes – is supplied with the exception of food and sleeping bags.
Stoves are currently being converted from propane to white gas.
The Texas Outdoor Family program has been teaching families how to camp safely for the past six years.
Campers learn new skills such as kayaking, fishing and geocaching. More than 3,500 families have participated in the educational state park camp-outs. For more, read the weekend Bowie News.
